WHO IS LUKA LESSON?

Luka 'Lesson' Haralampou is one of Australia's most prominent performance poets and poetry educators. With heritage from Greece, Luka's writing stretches across the deeply vulnerable, the powerfully political and the rich history of his family homeland.

During his years of tertiary education, Luka began to perform his poetry and raps while completing degrees in Anthropology (2004), Indigenous Studies (2006) & Sound Design (Performance Poetry, 2011). Eventually becoming the Australian Poetry Slam Champion at the end of 2011.

Luka now works tirelessly to bridge the gap between teacher and student - to help make poetry more accessible and exciting for the young people and teachers he works with.

As a testament to his years of work, Luka's own poem: 'May Your Pen Grace The Page' now appears on the HSC curriculum list for 'Craft of Writing' in NSW.

Luka has been commissioned by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (2018), been a poet-in-residence at The Scottish Poetry Library (2017) and performed a number of times at the Mecca of Slam Poetry: The Nuyorican Poets' Cafe in New York City. His work now focusses on reinterpreting Ancient Greek texts, and turning them into modern epics.

Luka's education stretches across hundreds of schools worldwide. From one-hour performances, to month-long residencies, to professional development sessions for teachers, and running his own poetry retreat in his grandfather's village in Greece.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)

HOW LONG DOES THE LICENSE LAST, EXACTLY?

When you purchase a license to Luka Lesson's Poetry In Education Teaching Resource, the license will last for 1 year from 6 May 2021 until 6 May 2022.

WILL THE RESOURCE GROW OVER TIME?

Yes. Luka Lesson and his team will be adding new materials and videos to the resource each year to keep up with the needs of students and teachers. As well as keeping up with Luka Lesson's new poetry and newly developed workshops.

WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL LICENSE INCLUDE, REALLY?

Every single member of staff can use this resource in their classroom. Even after-school programs, such as a book club or slam poetry club, can have access to the resource without any extra charge. This will result in potentially thousands of students accessing the resource and creating as much poetry as possible.

HOW DID YOU ARRIVE AT THE PRICE-POINT FOR THE RESOURCE?

After consulting with teachers and educators the price point of AUD$900 + GST was chosen. This was based on the average number of students in Australian schools and their capacity to pay a small amount to cover the cost via their parents' contribution. The majority of public schools would purchase this kind of resources in this way. In Australia, the average school has 400 students.

AUD$990 (incl. GST) divided by 400 = AUD$2.50 per student
AUD$990 (incl. GST) divided by 100 (year level) = AUD$9.90 per student

We believe this is a manageable price-point for schools and their students, without devaluing Luka's years of experience.

WHERE IS THE TEACHING RESOURCE HOUSED?

The Poetry In Education Teaching Resource is housed on a platform named Podia. It is a platform that is easy to use, instinctual and versatile in presenting not only video content, but also downloadable materials, links, notes and the ability for teachers to leave comments and post poems.

HOW DO MY STUDENTS AND STAFF LOGIN TO USE THE RESOURCE?

When you purchase your license on Podia, you will be prompted to create an account. Please use an email address and set a password that is generic in use and can be shared to those staff and students wanting access to the resource. More information on account management can be found here.

MY MISSION

"My dream is that this resource helps young people of all walks of life articulate themselves in powerful ways, for them to find themselves on the page, and for us to see them more clearly via the elevation of their voices.

I also dream of teachers feeling confident and relaxed when approaching the poetry segment of their English curriculums, knowing that there is a resource that will keep even the most reluctant young poet engaged and creating their own poetry.

I want to put my skills into the hands of teachers and education centres globally. I believe that in this way, my practice will be able to empower many more students and teachers to carry the poetic arts to new levels in their own ways"

- Luka Lesson, Poet & Educator
